Man creates 1:1 scale remote-controlled HUMMER H3

remote-controlled HUMMER H3

his ultimate toy has been created by engineer Dr James Brighton from Cranfield University. All the work has been made in about a month, and of course the engineer said he had a lot of fun during the process. Why is not that a surprise?

The results are clear – all controllers will be amazed by the handling ability – the best any radio controlled vehicle has had to date. The vehicle is capable of climbing a 407mm vertical wall, traverse a 40% side slope and operate in up to 610mm of water – imagine the fun”

Well bad news is that the toy won’t be available for sale! Damn! Might have been an interested toy for your kids!

Press release

HUMMER, the world’s most iconic boy’s toy, has converted the new right-hand drive H3 into the ultimate gadget for grown ups - a life sized remote controlled car that definitely won’t be available in your local toyshop.

The hardy on/off road vehicle has been converted to make life a little less dull – those lucky enough to have a play, will experience the unrivalled agility and off-road capability of the new H3 from the palm of their hand.

Engineer Dr. James Brighton from Cranfield University transformed the HUMMER H3 into a remote controlled vehicle to create the ultimate boy’s toy: “Converting the HUMMER H3 into the super-sized remote control car took a month to complete but we’ve had lots of fun in the process.

The results are clear – all controllers will be amazed by the handling ability – the best any radio controlled vehicle has had to date. The vehicle is capable of climbing a 407mm vertical wall, traverse a 40% side slope and operate in up to 610mm of water – imagine the fun”

Steve Catlin from HUMMER comments:
“HUMMER is like no other – as the ultimate workhorse it is built for action and can handle off-roading with ease but also has a unique, iconic style.

What better way to show off the definitive big boy’s toy than converting the HUMMER H3 into a remote controlled car?”

Hummer HX Concept

Hummer HX

At the Detroit Auto Show, Hummer unveiled the HX Concept, a small, open-air model which points towards the US brand’s plans for a compact SUV to compete head-on with the Freelander. The future model will be badged H4 and could go into production in almost a year.

The HX Concept features removable roof panels that enable the concept to adopt three different bodystyles. There’s a full hard-top and an exposed fastback, and by removing the rear C-pillars, it can be given the look of a military off-roader.

The HX Concept is powered by a direct-injection 3.6-litre FlexFuel V6. that runs on E85 bioethanol, that might also be used in the production version, so the H4 will be a quite eco-friendly model.

HUMMER HX concept to be unveiled at 2008 Detroit Auto Show

HUMMER HX

Scheduled for introduction at the 2008 North American International Auto Show, the HUMMER HX concept reflects the innovative minds of three new GM designers - David Rojas, Min Young Kang and Robert Jablonski - whose first assignment was to provide a vision for the future design of off-road vehicles. Fresh out of the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Mich., the designers’ first test in GM was to design a fun, nimble and innovative HUMMER concept.

“HUMMER appeals to young people globally and served as a perfect first assignment for our newest talent,” said Ed Welburn, vice president of global design and product planning. “Today’s graduates from top design schools are ready to hit the ground running. The HUMMER design challenge gave our newest designers an opportunity to sprint.”

The task presented numerous challenges to the new designers, from creating a vehicle for a brand known around the globe for its iconic design, to ensuring the model would live up to the market’s expectation of HUMMER off-road capability.

To help ensure designs were true to the HUMMER brand, these designers were given limited design direction by Carl Zipfel, an ex-professional motocross racer and director of the HUMMER design studio.

“Carl definitely set the tone,” said Rojas. “While he gave us creative liberty and challenged us to develop innovative ideas, he also defined three HUMMER proportions – wheelbase, approach and departure angles, and stance – and assigned one to each of us. It gave us a chance to collaborate, but also take our own direction.”

While sketching and sculpting together in the HUMMER studio, these recent graduates drew upon the creative energy of each other, further improving their individual designs, as well as that of the final concept.

“We drew inspiration from one another,” said Kang. “As you’re designing and sketching you try to absorb what the other designer is doing and try to make it better.”

David, Min Young and Robert’s collaboration inspired the HUMMER HX concept, which presents extraordinary efficiency without sacrificing the unique essence of the HUMMER brand, the world’s most capable off-road vehicles.

“While we took inspiration from the HUMMER heritage and DNA, we each wanted to evolve it in a new way,” said Jablonski. “We agreed it should be contemporary, compact and definitely open air. It came out great.”

After three months of sketching and sculpting theme work for the new HUMMER concept, each designer had the opportunity to present scale clay models to Bob Lutz, GM vice chairman and Ed Welburn, who chose which design would ultimately become the HX concept.

In its final concept form, the E-85 FlexFuel capable HUMMER HX embodies the off road spirit of HUMMER in a fully customizable package. The HX offers an open-air driving experience via a pair of removable roof panels above the driver and front passenger and a modular, removable rear roof assembly enabling a quick conversion from closed vehicle to open vehicle SUT. It also features a slant back assembly with removable doors and fender flairs.

“Working as a team, you realize it’s more than one person influencing the vehicle,” said Rojas. “You can see the inspiration from each of our designs in the final concept vehicle. We’re all proud to have the chance to see our sketches become reality.”

2007 HUMMER H3 Review

2008 Hummer H3

Recommended Retail Price: $51,990 - $59,990.

Nine out of ten people pointed their fingers and turned their heads, while the remainder simply shook their heads. This is the type of reaction you can only get with one car, the all new HUMMER H3. Classed as a mid-sized SUV, the HUMMER H3 demands a presence unlike any other vehicle both on and off the road.

Climb into the cabin and a respectable interior is on display. A classy gauge cluster with digital display offers an upmarket feel, while a metallic-look fascia backs the centre cluster. Insert a CD and be prepared to test your ear’s boundaries. Deep levels of bass and adequate treble make the HUMMER’s sound system one of the best in the business.
2008 Hummer H3
The pricing was a common point of discussion between passengers and onlookers. Not one person guessed the price – or was even within remote proximity of it. Priced from $51,990 for the manual H3 variant, the price tag undercut average guesses by some $40,000! Nobody was able to believe such a competent and sizeable vehicle could be so affordable.

Available in three models – the H3, H3 Luxury and H3 Adventure – prices start from $51,990 and finish at $59,990 for the automatic H3 Adventure.

Standard features in the base model include: Auto dimming rear vision mirror with inbuilt compass; cruise control; power windows; central locking; fog lights; alloy wheels; CD-player, electric side mirrors; full-sized spare tyre; ABS brakes and Electronic Stability Control (ESP).
Coupled with traffic splitting looks, loads of features and plenty of presence, it’s hard to fault the HUMMER. When you look at the pricing, it undercuts its competitors substantially and offers second to none 4WD’ing ability. Despite what some people say, the HUMMER is also relatively efficient and environment friendly in comparison to some of the overpowered V8 sedans sold on the market. The all new HUMMER H3 serves its purpose, and serves it well.

With 22 incorporated dealers nationwide, there is absolutely no reason I wouldn’t recommend checking out the HUMMER H3 if you’re serious about off-roading, or just want to make an impression, it’s hard to ignore the new H3.
